How to get there

There are two ways to get to the hostel – from below or from above:

Check the location here on Wikimapia, it´s like Google Earth but you don´t need any tools 😉

From below the way begins at the “Largo do Machado”-square, which is conveniently located in the district of Catete and has a Subway station of the same name. It is also the center of the “backpacker district” of Rio de Janeiro with many other young travellers gathering here every day. A large church (picture) dominates the square. It is a 2 min. walk form here to the Flamengo beach.

There is a small bus departing directly in front of the church during the entire day until 10 p.m. – it leaves approximately every 10 minutes and costs R$ 2. It takes only five minutes with this bus to the top of the dead end street which is the beginning of the favela. Just stay in the bus until it turns at the top of a little hill at the end of a dead end street. Get out right after it has turned and climb the hill to the pousada – you will find signs which will show you the exact direction 😉 !
… this ist the end of the street after the bus has turned. Get out and climb up the hill. It will take about 5 minutes, but it´s a steep climb of about 75 meters and 300 steps! Fortunately enough you will be able to enjoy a cold beer or caipirinha on top of the terrace of the “Pousada Favelinha” right afterwards 😉 Check here for a YouTube Video for the climb down the hill

Getting there from above is beautiful and quite a bit easier: Take bus 007 from “Central Metro Station” or bus 006 from “Carioca Metro Station”. Both busses also leave from Lapa (Rio´s biggest nightlife district and almost right in front of our door), at the corner of Avenida Gomes Freire and Rua Riachuelo. The yellow street car of Santa Teresa “Bondinho” also takes you from the City Centre or from Lapa directly to the upper entrance of the favela. Tell the bus or tram driver to let you out at the station “Falete” (speak “falédge”). The address is “Rua Almirante Alexandrino 2023″ and access is through the College “Assunção” A few white minibuses also take the same way from the “Arcos da Lapa”, ask them if they go into the direction “Dois Irmaos” to be in the right bus 😉
Get out at the “Colegio Asuncao” (picture to the left) after about a 9 minute ride. The entrance of the college os the entrance of the favela at the same time. A short stairway leads up a small hill, where you can relax and already take in the great views. Then it´s downhill about three minutes until you see the hostel. If you take a taxi, also tell the driver the address of the Colegio Asuncao: Rua Almirante Alexandrino 2023, Santa Teresa
